Sally Cecilia Hawkins\u00a0(born 27 April 1976) is an English actress of stage and screen. She began her career on stage and then moved into film, for which she has received\u00a0several accolades, including a\u00a0Golden Globe Award, as well as nominations for two\u00a0Academy Awards\u00a0and two\u00a0British Academy Film Awards.<\/p>\n
After graduating from the\u00a0Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, she started her career as a stage actress in productions such as\u00a0Romeo and Juliet (playing\u00a0Juliet),\u00a0Much Ado About Nothing, and\u00a0A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Her first major role was in\u00a0Mike Leigh’s\u00a0All or Nothing\u00a0in 2002. She continued working with Leigh, appearing in a supporting role in\u00a0Vera Drake\u00a0(2004) and taking the lead in\u00a0Happy-Go-Lucky\u00a0(2008), for which she won several awards, including the\u00a0Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture \u2013 Musical or Comedy\u00a0and the\u00a0Silver Bear for Best Actress.<\/p>\n
Hawkins appeared in two\u00a0Woody Allen\u00a0films,\u00a0Cassandra’s Dream\u00a0(2007) and\u00a0Blue Jasmine (2013); for the latter, she received an\u00a0Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She went on to play lead roles in\u00a0Made in Dagenham\u00a0(2010),\u00a0Paddington\u00a0(2014),\u00a0Maudie (2016), and\u00a0Paddington 2\u00a0(2017). She appeared in\u00a0Godzilla\u00a0(2014),\u00a0Godzilla: King of the Monsters\u00a0(2019) and\u00a0Wonka\u00a0(2023). For starring as Elisa Esposito, a mute cleaning woman in the fantasy film\u00a0The Shape of Water\u00a0(2017), she earned critical acclaim. She was nominated for the\u00a0Academy Award for Best Actress.<\/p>\n
She has also appeared in stage productions with the\u00a0Royal Court Theatre\u00a0in London, and in 2010 made her\u00a0Broadway\u00a0debut in\u00a0Mrs. Warren’s Profession. In 2012, she starred in\u00a0Constellations\u00a0at the Royal Court Theatre, which later moved to the\u00a0Duke of York’s Theatre\u00a0in the\u00a0West End. On television, she appeared in the\u00a0BBC\u00a0adaptations of\u00a0Tipping the Velvet\u00a0(2002) as Zena Blake and\u00a0Fingersmith\u00a0(2005) as Sue Trinder. She also appeared as\u00a0Anne Elliot\u00a0in\u00a0Persuasion\u00a0(2007),\u00a0ITV’s adaptation of\u00a0Jane Austen’s novel.
