Kathrin Romany Beckinsale\u00a0(born 26 July 1973)\u00a0is a British actress and model.<\/p>\n
She first gained notice while a student at Oxford University for her debut in the film adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Throughout the 1990s, she worked on both film and television, most notably by portraying the title character in the 1996 BBC television series Emma.<\/p>\n
She started film work in the United States in the late 1990s. She appeared in small-scale dramas\u00a0The Last Days of Disco\u00a0(1998) and\u00a0Brokedown Palace\u00a0(1999). In 2001, she garnered international recognition when she was cast as the romantic lead opposite Ben Affleck in her breakthrough film, Pearl Harbor (2001). She then starred in a number of films including the\u00a0romantic comedy Serendipity (2001), Tiptoes (2003),\u00a0The Aviator\u00a0(2004), and\u00a0Click\u00a0(2006).<\/p>\n
Since playing the role of\u00a0Selene\u00a0in the\u00a0Underworld\u00a0film series\u00a0(2003\u20132016), she has become known for her work in action films, including\u00a0Van Helsing (2004), Whiteout (2009),\u00a0Contraband\u00a0(2012), and\u00a0Total Recall\u00a0(2012).<\/p>\n
In 2016, she received critical acclaim for her performance in the period comedy film\u00a0Love & Friendship, for which she received a nomination for the\u00a0Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actress in a Comedy. She returned in action films with Jolt (2021).
