Widely regarded as a leading figure in\u00a0South Korean\u00a0and 21st-century\u00a0world cinema, he is known for films that blend\u00a0crime,\u00a0mystery, and\u00a0thriller\u00a0elements with other genres. His films are noted for their cinematography, framing,\u00a0black humour, and often brutal subject matter.<\/p>\n
After two unsuccessful films in the 1990s, which he has since largely disowned, Park came to prominence with his acclaimed third directorial effort,\u00a0Joint Security Area\u00a0(2000), which became the\u00a0highest-grossing film in South Korean history\u00a0at the time and which Park himself prefers to be regarded as his directorial debut.\u00a0Using his newfound creative freedom, he would go on to direct the films forming his unofficial\u00a0The Vengeance Trilogy:\u00a0Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance\u00a0(2002), a financial failure that polarised critics, followed by\u00a0Oldboy (2003) and\u00a0Lady Vengeance\u00a0(2005), both of which received critical acclaim and were financially successful.\u00a0Oldboy\u00a0in particular is regarded as\u00a0one of the greatest films ever made, and helped establish Park as a well-known director outside his native country.<\/p>\n
Most of Park’s work following\u00a0The Vengeance Trilogy\u00a0was also commercially and critically successful both in South Korea and internationally, such as\u00a0Thirst\u00a0(2009),\u00a0The Handmaiden\u00a0(2016), which earned Park the\u00a0BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language, and\u00a0Decision to Leave\u00a0(2022), which won the\u00a0Best Director\u00a0award at the\u00a02022 Cannes Film Festival. He directed the English-language miniseries\u00a0The Little Drummer Girl\u00a0(2018) and\u00a0The Sympathizer\u00a0(2024). His 2025 film\u00a0No Other Choice\u00a0was nominated for the\u00a0Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film\u00a0and shortlisted for the\u00a0Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.<\/p>\n
