Jonathan Drew Groff\u00a0(born March 26, 1985) is an American actor and singer. Known for his performances on stage and screen, he has received several accolades, including a\u00a0Tony Award and a\u00a0Grammy Award, as well as a \u00a0Primetime Emmy Award nomination. He was included in the annual\u00a0Time\u00a0100 list of the most influential people in the world\u00a0in 2026.<\/p>\n
He began his career on\u00a0Broadway, making his debut in the musical\u00a0In My Life\u00a0(2005). He later received Tony Award nominations for playing Melchior Gabor in the original production of the\u00a0rock musical\u00a0Spring Awakening\u00a0(2006), King\u00a0George III\u00a0in the original production of the historical musical\u00a0Hamilton\u00a0(2015), and\u00a0Bobby Darin\u00a0in the original production of the\u00a0jukebox musical\u00a0Just in Time\u00a0(2025). In 2024, he won the\u00a0Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical\u00a0for playing Franklin Shepard in the musical revival of\u00a0Stephen Sondheim’s\u00a0Merrily We Roll Along. He also starred as Seymour Krelborn in the\u00a0Off-Broadway\u00a0musical revival of\u00a0Little Shop of Horrors\u00a0in 2019.<\/p>\n

He starred as Patrick Murray in the\u00a0HBO\u00a0comedy-drama series\u00a0Looking\u00a0(2014\u201315), the network’s first series centring on the lives of gay men, as well as its subsequent television film,\u00a0Looking: The Movie (2016). He portrayed\u00a0FBI Special Agent\u00a0Holden Ford in the\u00a0Netflix\u00a0period crime drama\u00a0Mindhunter (2017\u201319). He was\u00a0Primetime Emmy Award-nominated for his role in the\u00a0Disney+\u00a0live stage recording\u00a0of\u00a0Hamilton\u00a0(2020).<\/p>\n
Groff made his film debut playing\u00a0Michael Lang\u00a0in\u00a0Ang Lee’s\u00a0Taking Woodstock\u00a0(2009). He has since played\u00a0Louis J. Weichmann\u00a0in\u00a0The Conspirator\u00a0(2010),\u00a0Smith\u00a0in\u00a0The Matrix Resurrections (2021), and a father held hostage in\u00a0Knock at the Cabin\u00a0(2023).
