Matthew Robert Smith\u00a0(born 28 October 1982) is an English actor. He is known for playing the\u00a0Eleventh Doctor\u00a0in the\u00a0BBC\u00a0science fiction television series\u00a0Doctor Who\u00a0(2010\u20132013),\u00a0Prince Philip\u00a0in\u00a0Netflix’s historical series\u00a0The Crown\u00a0(2016\u20132017)\u2014for which he received a\u00a0Primetime Emmy Award\u00a0nomination\u2014and\u00a0Daemon Targaryen\u00a0in\u00a0HBO’s fantasy drama series\u00a0House of the Dragon(2022\u2013present).<\/p>\n
Smith initially aspired to be a professional\u00a0footballer, but\u00a0spondylolysis\u00a0forced him out of the sport. After joining the\u00a0National Youth Theatre\u00a0and studying drama and creative writing at the\u00a0University of East Anglia, he began his acting career in 2003, performing in plays such as\u00a0Murder in the Cathedral,\u00a0Fresh Kills,\u00a0The History Boys, and\u00a0On the Shore of the Wide World\u00a0in London theatres. Extending his repertoire into\u00a0West End\u00a0theatre, he has since performed in the stage adaptation of\u00a0Swimming with Sharks\u00a0with\u00a0Christian Slater, followed a year later by a critically acclaimed performance in\u00a0That Face.<\/p>\n
Smith’s first television role was in 2006 as\u00a0Jim Taylor\u00a0in the BBC adaptations of\u00a0Philip Pullman’s\u00a0The Ruby in the Smoke\u00a0and\u00a0The Shadow in the North. His first significant television role came as Danny in the 2007 BBC series\u00a0Party Animals. In film, he has played a\u00a0dual role\u00a0in the science fiction film\u00a0Womb\u00a0(2010), the\u00a0physical forms\u00a0of\u00a0Skynet\u00a0in the cyberpunk action film\u00a0Terminator Genisys\u00a0(2015), a 1960s pimp in the psychological horror film\u00a0Last Night in Soho\u00a0(2021) and\u00a0Milo Morbius\u00a0in the superhero film\u00a0Morbius\u00a0(2022).<\/p>\n
